Our Company

PocketSonics, headquartered in Charlottesville, VA was formed in 2004 by a group of University of Virginia professors to address the market need for ultra-portable, easy to use Ultrasound imaging.  Bringing together a combination of academic and commercial expertise in Integrated Circuit DesignElec,  Acoustics & Transducer Design, and Novel Beamforming Algorithms, the team spawned ideas that went contrary to how traditional ultrasound technologies had ever been engineered before.  The resulting novel approaches yielded the conceptual design for the "Sonic Window" as well as the creation of several pending patents.  

To date, the company has received over $1M in Grant and Equity financing. 

Our Management Team

Travis Blalock, Ph.D  -  Founder & Chief Engineer

   Mr. Blalock is Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at UVA.  He has seven years of experience at Hewlett-Packard labs, where he was principle designer of the core IC technology currently used in the Optical Mouse.  He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Auburn University and holds more than a dozen patents.

John Hossack, Ph.D.  -  Founder & Chief Designer

   Mr. Hossack is Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering at UVA.  He spent seven years at Acuson (now a Siemens company) as an Acoustics Design Engineer specifically focused in the areas of transducer design, beamforming, and 3-D imaging.  He earned his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Strathclyde and has over 75 patents to his credit.

William Walker, Ph.D.  -  Founder & Chief Technolgist

   Mr. Walker is Associate Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Electrical & Computer Engineering at UVA.  He previously launched a high-tech startup while serving as an Assistant Professor at Duke University.  He earned his Ph. D. in Biomedical Engineering from Duke, is widely published, has authored five patent, and currently has numerous other patents pending.

Jeff Pompeo,  MBA  -  President & CEO

   Mr. Pompeo serves as president of the company and has a long career with private equity based startup firms as well as large technology companies.  He previously has served as President of GE-Cisco Industrial Networks and Chief Technology Officer of two different High-Tech ventures.  He holds a BA in Computer Science from James Madison University and an MBA from Virginia Tech.

Todd Hochrein,  MBA  - Chief Financial Officer

    Mr. Hochrein serves as CFO and brings many years of startup experience to the company.  He has raised over $100 million in debt and equity financing for a variety of businesses, and previously served as CFO of two startup ventures.  He holds a BS in Business Administration and an MBA from the University of Richmond.
